Innovative optics to unveil brain activity at unexplored scales
Optical imaging is one of the very rare technique that offers the opportunity to measure brain activity at the “mesoscopic” scale (Chemla & Chavane, 2010b). The vast majority of neuronal recording techniques are indeed restricted to microscopic scale (i.e. the neuron, intra or extracellular recordings) or macroscopic scale (i.e. the whole brain, fMRI, TEP, EEG, MEG). Only recently a series of techniqueal advances have open new imaging capacities at the “mesoscopic” scale using optical recordings or dense multi-electrodes arrays (Fig 1).
