Photonics and imaging
Photonics concerns the use of light in scientific and industrial applications.
Identified as one of 6 key technologies by the European Commission, photonics is a cross-cutting sector concerning the following high-potential fields: medical, virtual and augmented reality, energy, environment, security, transport, space, telecoms, etc.
It is found within many applications used in everyday life, such as photovoltaics (which uses light to make energy), LED technology (which creates light), cameras (which detect and capture light) and security and laser technologies (which amplify light) alongside medical applications.
The foundations of digital culture, information and communication technologies are also strongly impacted by photonics. This is evidenced by the fact that today, internet is circulated via very high-speed fibre optics networks.
This means that photonics is at the core of tomorrow’s digital solutions.
